What are the disadvantages of using a fixed angle rotor?
Fixed angle rotors generally have low capacities. For pelleting cells, they may not be ideal as the pellet formed is not centralised in the tube, which can lead to sample loss during deceleration and pellet removal. There are a limited number of tubes available for higher speed applications.
What are the advantages of using a swing rotor?
Swing out rotors generally give large capacities (number of tubes or voume). Due to the swing out action, pellets form centrally at the bottom of the tubes (ideal for 15/50ml conicals). Large buckets means great flexibility, which included widest variety of tubes or micrplates.
Attention: in a swing rotor, every position MUST be equiped with a bucket!
What are the disadvantages of using a swing rotor?
Swing-out rotors need maintenance - regularly cleaning and greasing to reduce vibration and imbalance. Due to the size and drag of the rotors when spinning, speeds are limited.
How long is it safe to use centrifuge rotors for?
Running a centrifuge rotor and bucket, exerts a hugh stress load. Over time this causes fatigue which the material. Therefore each rotor will be supplied with a recommended maximum number of spins and or maximum age (which ever comes first). Please refer to the documentation supplied with you centrifuge/rotors for further details.
